My uncle Joseph has paid quite a tribute to my father as has my uncle Nephi and Grandfather Lehi. But let me give you a son’s perspective.
My father was a just man. My father was faithful in keeping the law of the gospel. It is common for us to think of a “just man” as one who is impartial and fair, but to me it has a far deeper meaning. A just man is one that has kept his covenants with exactness and honor. As you study scriptures you will find other references to “just men.” As you study you will learn that angels appear to just and holy men. It is this meaning as related to the doctrine of justification which embraces the idea that one who has been obedient to the laws and ordinances of the gospel has the rightful expectation of obtaining an exaltation. I certainly have this expectation for my father Jacob.
I love my father very much. I consider him a just man for other reasons as well. He taught me many things both simple and grand. He taught me to read and write his language and he nurtured and instructed me in the things of God. For this my heart is filled with thanksgiving. I will bless the name of God for it all my days.
My father’s life was an example of his love for our Savior. I have often heard my father speak concerning eternal life, and the joy of the saints, and all his teachings have sunk deep into my heart. As he gave me the duty to continue this blog he told you he was getting old, and he was. He lived a very long life full of great spiritual experiences and many great heartbreaks for the wickedness of our people and for the hard heartedness of his brothers and their families. I don’t begin to pretend to have been as valiant as he was, yet I will strive to continue his work but I do miss him.
