This is Laman, Nephi’s oldest brother and I want to tell you our father has quite embarrassed our family with his constant proclamations about the wickedness of the great city Jerusalem. We all know Jerusalem will never fall. We proved that a few years ago when the city was invaded by the Babylonians led by Nebuchadnezzar. Things may have changed some but the city did not fall.
My father considered King Josiah a righteous king but all he did was push everyone to covenant to obey God’s commandments and upset so many of us. But if King Josiah was so great he wouldn’t have been killed by the Egyptians at Megiddo. God must not have cared so much about him. We are doing just fine on our own and had Josiah been such a great king, the Babylonians would not have invaded in the first place. At least when Nebuchadnezzar invaded, he was smart and placed Zedekiah on the throne. So now things are settled.
Jerusalem has grown into a great walled city. King David’s Jerusalem was nothing compared to what it is now. We have built it to probably 10 times what David ever achieved.
With our beautiful stone houses, the protective wall built by Hezekiah and the greatness of our leaders, this city has withstood the siege of the Assyrian Empire. We can and will stand against Egypt or Babylon.
If my father were to be consistent he would admit that the fact that this is supposedly God’s city, any notion of conquest is unthinkable.
As for Urijah, he deserved what he got. He upset our leaders, our society and really made his own problems. In one way Nephi is right, if my father keeps it up, it is possible that he could cause the same problems for himself. The problem with my father is, he will probably mess it up for the whole family.
