By Mormon, Prophet and Historian

I sit among the records of my people, my task is clear—abridge the centuries of history onto the plates that will one day come forth by the power of God. I have already labored over the great accounts of our wars, our kings, our prophets, and our faith. Under the direction of the Spirit, I have carefully chosen what to include, engraving the most vital truths into these plates. And yet, something weighs upon my heart.
I find that I also have in my possession the plates of Nephi—the very records that stretched from Nephi himself to the reign of King Benjamin. These plates given to King Benjamin by Malaki were preserved by righteous men and passed down through generations. These plates contain more than history; they are the voice of our earliest prophets, the pure doctrine of Christ, and the plain and precious truths that have guided our people from the beginning.
At first, I believed my abridgment was enough, that I had included all that was necessary. But as I review these sacred records, the Spirit of the Lord impresses upon me a truth I cannot ignore: These words must be preserved in their fullness. They are not merely a history but a witness—one that will be needed in the last days when the world will once again search for truth.
Thus, I set aside my own judgment and follow the will of God, and include this record of Nephi upon these plates. I do not know all the reasons, only that the Lord has commanded it. Whatever the reason, I obey, knowing that the Lord’s wisdom far exceeds my own.
To those who one day will read these words, I give this plea: Do not take them lightly. These are not mere stories of the past but a guide for your salvation. They will have been preserved for you—so that you might know of Christ, of His gospel, and of the consequences of rejecting His voice.
I have done my part. The rest is in your hands.
