An often repeated theme in this blog is the importance and the value of a written record. Because you are actually reading this, you are showing some interest in the written record of my people who have since passed by the time you are reading this record. We are no different, we were fascinated to learn of other societies which pre-dated us.
As I mentioned earlier, the people of Zarahemla had no written record and our records, including the plates of brass were considered a gift from God when we united our people with theirs. Let me tell you about another very unique record that fascinated us.
After arriving here in Zarahemla and Mosiah becoming the king of all the land, there was a large stone brought to him with engravings on it. The people of Zarahemla had discovered this stone but obviously since they had no written language, they were unable to read it, even if it had been written in a language familiar to them. The engravings on the stone were not familiar to us either. By the gift and power of God, King Mosiah was able to interpret the engravings on the stone. They gave an account of a man named Coriantumr and his people who had all been slain. Coriantumr was discovered by the people of Zarahemla and he lived with them for nine months. The engravings on the stone also told his ancestry. We learned that Coriantumr’s first parents came to this promised land, leaving at the time of the tower when the Lord confounded the language of the people.
The record engraved upon this large stone emphasizes one of the fundamental prophetic messages of this blog; that failure to follow the teachings of the Lord and the allowing of wickedness to take over a people will lead to the destruction of that people. Coriantumr’s people became ripe in wickedness and were destroyed according to the Lord’s severe judgments, which are just. The bones of Coriantumr’s people lay scattered in the land northward.
